Bayon Temple

The Small Tour of the temples of Angkor covers a distance of 17 kilometres and takes in most of the sights you will have seen in travel magazines and popular movies. The tour starts at the breathtaking Angkor Wat (built between 1112 and 1152) before moving on to the atmospheric Ta Prohm (made famous in the film ‘Tomb Raider’), Bantay Kdei, the Terrace of Elephants, the Twelve Prasats, Spean Thma, Bayon and Sra Srang.

This tour is available by air conditioned car, tuk tuk or mini van, for larger groups. As it is usually hot and humid in the jungle around the temples, many visitors will appreciate air conditioned comfort between each of these interesting sites.

Your guide, Chanthy, is knowledgeable and will explain to you the meaning of the beautifully carved bas reliefs that can be found at many of these temples. It really is a great privilege to be able to explore the hidden vaults and galleries of these ancient monuments and not difficult to see why many consider this to be one of the world’s most magical destinations.

Banteay Srei Temple

The 10th Century Banteay Srei Temple (or citadel of beauty) is one of the smaller in the area but is well worth a visit. Unusually, this temple is made from a hard red sandstone which can be carved like wood and, as a result, the carvings are beautifully ornate. Almost every part of the buildings are covered in artwork which many believe to be amongst the best preserved and most beautiful in all the temples.

Beng Mealea Temple

Beng Mealea Temple is a valuable addition to the small tour and perhaps one of the area’s most enjoyable visits for the more adventurous. On the way, you will have the chance to see a little of rural life as you travel the back roads through the paddy fields and small villages that lie off the beaten track. The temple itself is a little outside the main group and is largely unrestored. Here visitors can scramble over the fallen ruins and discover hidden chambers and galleries within. As this gem is a little off the usual tourist routes it is quieter and often you will find yourself wandering around alone.
