Sambor Prei Kuk
This pre Angkorian temple complex dates back to the Chenla Kingdom which existed between the 6th and 8th Centuries. Set on the eastern banks of the massive Tonle Sap Lake, the now ruined site was the royal sanctuary of the time and was once the capital of the kingdom. Octagonal towers, prasats, Shiva lingas and yonis are set among the mature sub tropical forest in a 1000 acre site occupied by over 150 Hindu temples which now lie in ruins.
In 1970, Nixon ordered the secret bombing of Khmer Rouge positions in the area and many of the temples today have craters around them as a result of the American bombs. The guerrillas left mines at the site that were cleared in 2008.
