Preah Vihear Temple

The well preserved ruins of the 11th Century Preah Vihear Temple

This stunning 11th Century temple, which lies perched atop an escarpment with magnificent views of the plains below, was off limits as recently as 2011 due to a border dispute with neighbouring Thailand. Thankfully, it is now possible to visit again and the presence of the Cambodian army, together with the fortifications that remain, add to the sense of adventure in this out of the way destination.

The day begins early with a 6.30 am departure from Siem Reap and a two and a half hour journey towards the Thai border. On arrival at the site, we change cars for a local four wheel drive and make the final steep ascent towards the top of the mountain. There you will see soldiers from the Cambodian army who spend their days watching the Thai army using binoculars, who in turn are observing them.

The temple itself is well preserved due in part to its remote location but unfortunately some of the carvings which adorn the gates were damaged by sniper fire during the 2011 dispute. An 800 metre walkway guides visitors to the main temple, where you will enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from this elevated position.

It is possible to walk down the steps towards the Thai border, which is cut off by rolls of barbed wire and has mine field warnings. The temple area itself is perfectly safe however.

Koh Ker Temple

On the way back to Siem Reap, we will stop at Koh Ker, the 10th Century capital of the Kingdom and site of a wonderful pyramid temple. The area surrounding Koh Ker is home to many temples and we can visit as many as you like, depending on time and how much energy you have left!
